Legg-Calvé-Perthes is a rare disease of the hip that affects about 1 in 1200 children of which about 75% are boys. This disease causes decreased blood flow which can lead to bone death and deformity of the hip joint. Typically, the disease presents itself with pain in the hip, groin or knee and is sometimes accompanied with a limp. There are both surgical and non-surgical treatments for Perthes disease. Non-surgical treatment can include casts, traction, braces and physical therapy. Surgical treatment may involve either a tenotomy (release of the atrophied muscle) or an osteotomy (cutting the bone to reposition it). The goal of both treatment types is to reduce hip irritability, restore hip mobility, and stabilize the hip ball.
