Allograft Bone Transplantation

allograft_edited

Allograft bone transplantation is a treatment option available through the Bone Healing program at The Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk.  Allograft bone comes from a deceased donor and has been processed through an FDA approved bone bank.  Allograft bone is used in a number of orthopedic surgical procedures including knee replacements and spine surgery.

We utilize allograft bone to fill large defects usually caused by traumatic injury or extensive bone infection.  The donor bone received from the bone bank is "size-matched" to assure the most precise fit is achieved. The donor bone received is cut by the orthopedic surgeon to the exact size needed to fit into the area of the defect. The allograft bone is plated into place to provide for stability. In many occurrences the donor bone will be filled with antibiotic cement to aid in avoiding any infection.
