Meet Our Physicians

Experts from multiple surgical and medical disciplines for The Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk, and provide alternatives to patients at risk of losing a limb. The Denver Clinic, based at Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, has treated more than 8,000 patients with trauma, infection, bone and soft tissue tumors and other diseases that jeopardize limbs. The group includes orthopedists, microvascular surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, internists, psychiatrists, and infectious disease specialists. Patients come from throughout the Rocky Mountain region and plains states. In addition to treatment, The Denver Clinic physicians provide diagnostic evaluations, second opinions and consultations.



Stephen J. Annest, MD

thumb_annest_nov07.jpgDr. Steve Annest has been a member of Vascular Institute of the Rockies since its inception in 1995. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington, completed a surgical residency at Albany Medical Center, NY, and performed his vascular fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Dr. Annest treats patients with all forms of arterial and venous disease and travels as an outreach physician to clinics in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. He treats patients across the country with thoracic outlet syndrome and has become one of the national experts on this problem.  He has been successful using an innovative approach to treat patients with recurrent brachial plexus problems after thoracic outlet surgery. Dr. Annest is board certified in vascular and general surgery and is fellowship-trained in trauma.

William C. Brown, MD

thumb_brown_nov07.jpgDr. Bill Brown is Co-Medical Director of Extremities at Risk with Dr. Ross Wilkins. Dr. Brown is the resident expert on vascularized bone grafting procedures. He attended medical school at McGill University and completed a residency in plastic & microvascular surgery at Duke University. Further specialty training was completed in Louisville, Kentucky at the Christine Klienert Institute for Hand and microvascular surgery. He is one of three dedicated surgeons who participate in the upper extremity replant service provided by Extremities at Risk.

Raymond N. Blum, MD

thumb_blum_nov07.jpgDr. Ray Blum is a board certified specialist in infectious diseases. He graduated from  the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and completed a residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in infectious diseases at University of Colorado Affiliated Hospitals. He is the current Chairman of the Board for the Denver Medical Library at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center and is actively involved with the Extremities at Risk team in treating infections and patients with Osteomyelitis.

Jennifer Clark, MD

thumb_clark_nov07.jpgDr. Jennifer Clark is a pediatric hematologist oncologist with the Rocky Mountain Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic. She attended medical school at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore MD and her pediatric residence in Harvard Combined Residency in Medicine and Pediatrics, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston MA. In addition she completed her fellowship in hematology-oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston MA. 

 
Rebekah Gass, MD

thumb_r.gass.w.jpgDr. Rebekah Gass is an infectious disease and internal medicine physician with the Infectious Disease Consultants, P.C. She attended medical school at the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and completed her residency in internal medicine at Toronto Hospital at the University of Toronto. She attended Portland VA Medical Center, Oregon Health Sciences University for her fellowship in general internal Medicine. Her fellowship in infectious disease was completed at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO. She was also a clinical fellow in pediatric infectious diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

 
David B. Hahn, MD

thumb_hahn_nov07.jpgA graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Hahn earned his medical degree at Case Western University. His orthopaedic residency was completed at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, and his residency at Scottish Rite Hospital. In his practice at Colorado Limb Consultants, he specializes in correcting lower limb deformities caused by Malunion, Osteomyelitis, and Congenital anamolies. He is active in the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, The Association for the Study and Application of the Methods of Ilizarov, and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America.

Ioana Hinshaw, MD

thumb_hinshaw_nov07.jpgDr. Hinshaw is a board certified medical oncologist with the Midtown office of Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. She received her medical diploma from the University of General Medicine in Bucharest, Romania, in 1988. She served internships at the Bucharest Municipal Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, Romania, from 1978 to 1990, and also the Bexar County Hospital District, University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Her residency in internal medicine was at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Following completion of her internal medicine residency, she completed her fellowship at the Department of Medical Oncology, University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. As a member of The Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk, Dr. Hinshaw in involved in the treatment of adult sarcoma patients.

 
Ronald R. Hugate, MD

thumb_Hugate2.jpgThe newest member of Colorado Limb Consultants, Dr. Hugate recently relocated to Denver after completing a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He specializes in complex joint replacement and bone and soft tissue tumors. His internship and residency were done at Penn State University after graduating with honors from Eastern Virginia Medical School. As a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service at the Combat Surgical Hospital in Baghdad. He is the most recent addition to The Denver Clinic team.

Cynthia M. Kelly, MD

thumb_kelly_nov07.jpgDr. Cindy Kelly has been a member of the Denver Clinic since 1995. She obtained her MD degree at UCLA, graduating with honors and completed her orthopeadic surgery training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. After completing a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at UCLA she relocated to Denver and joined the Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk. Her areas of interest and expertise are bone and soft tissue tumors, in all age groups, and Osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis of bone). Dr Kelly is one of a handful of nationally recognized experts in surgical procedures for the treatment of osteonecrosis. She is a member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and participates in clinical research in the areas of bone and soft tissue tumors.

Omar Mubarak, MD

thumb_mubarak1_nov07.jpgDr. Mubarak was born and raised in Denver, Colorado.  He graduated cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1994 with a Bachelors degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology along with a minor in philosophy.  Dr. Mubarak obtained his medical degree in 1999 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.  He completed his general surgery residency at Michigan State University and his vascular surgery Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in July 2004.  Dr. Mubarak's special areas of interest are endovascular and open surgery. 

 
Lisa R. Nowak, MD

She is widely experienced, having practiced as a trauma surgeon in Pittsburgh before moving to the University of Iowa for a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery. She is board certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Her research at the University of Iowa focused on reoperative carotid surgery results and outcomes assessment and quality of life evaluation in Thoracic Outlet Patients.

Lorrie F. Odom, MD

thumb_odom_nov07.jpgDr. Lorrie Odom is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist with the Rocky Mountain Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic and serves as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She attended medical school at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency as well as her pediatric hematology-oncology at Harvard Medical School Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston.  Her fellowship in pediatric hematology-immunology was completed at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Odom serves on the P/SL Cancer Committee, P/SL Palliative Care Committee and is involved in the treatment of childhood osteosarcoma at the Denver Clinic.

 
David P. Schnur, MD

thumb_schnur_nov07.jpgDr. Schnur is a microvascular surgeon with the Plastic Surgery Clinic and he participates in taking calls for the replant program, as well as microvascular reconstruction of extremity soft tissue deficits. He attended medical school at the University of Arizona, and his general surgery and plastic surgery residencies were completed at the University of Pennsylvania. His fellowship in Hand and microvascular surgery was completed in San Antonio, TX. He is an active member of The Denver Clinic team specializing in microvascular tissue transfers and muscle flaps.

Dr. Matt Terra is one of three infectious disease specialists on the Extremities at Risk team.  After earning his undergraduate degree magna cum laude and medical degree from Georgetown University, he completed his postgraduate residency in internal medicine and infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Colorado.

Alan Y. Synn, MD, RVT, FACS

thumb_synn.jpgDr. Synn is one of the founding members of the Vascular Institute of the Rockies. His clinical interests span the full breadth of vascular surgery. He maintains a special emphasis in complex arterial surgery and endovascular therapies, particularly the endograft treatment of aortic aneurysms. In addition to caring for his patients, he is a scientific investigator in modern therapies that help the patient with vascular disease.

Conrad J. Tirre, MD

tirre_nov07.jpgDr. Tirre earned his M.D. from the St. Louis University and completed postgraduate training in general surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital. His plastic surgery residency was completed at the Universities of Colorado. He completed his hand and microvascular residency at the University of Oregon. As a member of The Denver Clinic team for several years, his focus is on traumatic amputation, microvascular free tissue transfers, and pedicled muscle flaps. He is in private practice with the Plastic Surgery Clinic and provides emergency care in the 24-hour replant program.

Ross M. Wilkins, MD, MS

thumb_wilkins_nov07.jpgRoss Wilkins, MD, MS founded the Institute for Limb Preservation with the late Dr. Tom Arganese in 1989 and now presides as Co-Medical Director for the re-named Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk. He received a master's degree in cellular biology from the University of Colorado and his medical degree from Wayne State University. Following his postgraduate training at the University of Colorado, he completed a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to being the senior partner at Colorado Limb Consultants, Dr. Wilkins serves as Medical Director for AlloSource and is an Affiliate Faculty Member at Colorado State University. He is recognized internationally as an expert on Limb Preservation, bone and soft tissue tumors, and bone transplantation.
